UFC 94 second update and UPGRADE

We've had some good interest for this... which is understandable since it's going to be rad. I hope Penn comes in shape and ready to defend himself from GSP's onslaught.

Paul has offered his place, which is way better since his LCD is bigger and his sound is better and we can drink our own beer and it'll be cheaper. Also, we don't need to get there early anymore !! Try to get there between 7:30 and 8pm.

His place is bigger than Melrose too :)

He lives up near Cougar Ridge but a little south. At ....

Keith, get Craig out, I don't think I would reconize him not in a jersey.

Wanted: Campy 10spd Rear Derailleur

I'm in need of a new/used Campy 10spd rear derailleur as I've trashed mine recently. If anyone would consider selling a Chorus or Record rear derailleur please let me know.

Happy riding,

Jason W.

UFC 94 update

I have a table reserved at Melrose Cafe & Bar (17th ave across from Western Canada High School).

There is a cheap surface lot on the West side of Western Canada High (across from the Starbucks). Parking can be crazy down there.

We will need to be there by 6pm as the expect a sell out on this card. Please let me know if you are still in.

Thanks

Michael

Check out Page 6 of today's Calgary Sun!

Well... I didn't make the final cut of the photo, but we managed to cram a lot of spinners into one shot!  As I suspected, Rob, Bonnie, Tracey, Lisa, Mitzie, and Rick were much more photogenic than Alex and I. Good posing guys.

If someone has an online subscription to this newpaper, can you please send me an electronic copy of this article?

Thanks, Trev

Members signing up from now until Feb. 13th, and then beyond...

We are still welcoming new team members, and encourage you to sign up. In order to receive custom team clothing early enough for the start of the race season however, you will need to download the clothing spreadsheet to your right and follow the instructions.

After this deadline, we will still accept new members, however we will have to slowly accumulate enough clothing orders to justify an order after this, so your clothing will undoubtedly come after the race season has started. You can still race for ST Cycling with a jersey from the store though in the mean time, but it will just mean you have to buy that jersey as well.

Thanks for the continued membership sign up.

Medium Team Jacket

Does anyone have a medium size team jacket I can borrow next week? We want to look like the Speed Theory Pain Train during the 300km Brevet. The large jacket I now have (mixed up with somone at the last TT) doesn't show off my figure properly.

Thanks
Stephen

UFC 94

It is not position to make unilateral decisions on behalf of the club, but the time has come for a team get together, bonding over guys who suffer as much as we do.

Next Saturday, January 31 is UFC 94. Canadian bad ass Georges St. Pierre, current Welterweight champ is fighting BJ "the Prodigy" Penn for the championship. These two guys had a war a few years ago that went to a split decision for St. Pierre. It will be a great fight.

I can set up a table for us at Melrose, great place to watch UFC, the atmosphere will be awesome as this is a highly anticipated fight. I will likely need to make the reservation by Wednesday of next week, so anyone interested in coming respond to the post.

Michael

Clothing Spreadsheet has been created.

OK, the spreadsheet will be going out Monday morning. It is being sent to team members through the Karelo mailing list. If you have not received it by Tues. morning, email me or leave a comment. You will have until Feb. 13th to have a cheque written and your completed spreadsheet emailed back to me.

If you are not a race team member yet, and plan to be, we will not have extra clothes this year. Therefore, it is time to register if you want clothes for early season races. People that decide to join at a late date can use the ST jersey from the store, however it won't be as cool as ours and the correct size won't be guaranteed.
I am excited about this team kit since it will be an improvement on Alberta's best kit already and it will only be available to race team members !!

Crankmasters Pub & Awards Night

Are there any other ST folks that are also second-tier Crankmasters members heading to the Pub night tonight? Just curious.

Team Clothing and making sure you are a member.

OK, we are going to get cracking on ordering clothing. I will be sending out the spreadsheet for you to sign up what, and how many, you want very soon. I will use the Karelo email list. So if you are not a club member yet and plan on racing for the team, it would be in your best interest to sign up very soon.

The modifications we are going to make to the existing jersey are:
1.)  Right under the main logo on the front and back we will have 'Race Team'. So it will say 'Speed Theory Race Team' in two lines.
2.) We're going to add a red band around the left arm's sleeve, with 'Jason Lapeirre Memorial' written in black.

These jerseys will only be given to race team members, so that is really cool.

SO... morale of the story is:   You can definately become a race team member after this deadline coming up, however we cannot guarantee clothing for you right at the start of the season.

Forever hold your peace.

Here is a link to the manufacturer we will be using  There are several samples in the store so you can get an idea of the sizing scheme they use. Thanks Thomas for reminding me to add these points.

Update on the Jason Lapierre Memorial Scholarship

Here is just a short update on the fundraising activities for the Jason Lapierre Memorial Scholarship.

To date, we have raised $18,649.42. The annual scholarship has already been given out once, and I would expect an announcement for this year's recipient soon.

For more information on how to donate, please visit:

On behalf of the organizers of the scholarship, I would like to thank all those who have donated. I apologize if I missed anyone, I know those Speed Theory members who have donated through Karelo have not yet been included. Thanks also to those who have played/donated to our annual TdF contest, where funds have gone to the scholarship.

Road Ride Report

Highway 8 from the city limits to Bragg Creek is in good riding condition, likewise most of Highway 22. The shoulder is snow free, dry and clean. I'll probably head out there Sunday afternoon for 50 or 60 K fixed. Don't know about Springbank roads.

Cycling Kit Question

Team,

On Tuesday night I did a really good workout in the basement and just had a kit question. Lockie may have the best answer to this.

When I was getting my cycling shorts on I noticed that I was trying to coordinate my shorts and the holes in the shorts from my TR crash, to the scars under the shorts. Is that something that you should just look beyond. I know Trev likes to make sure that he lines up his shorts to his tan lines and I was just thinking that this might be somewhat extreme.

If anyone has any suggestions on this, I am kind of looking forward to Lockies response, I think he had the most crash landings last year.

Manorexia contest

I have found an easy to use free site that will allow use for eating, exercise and weight. You can then publish this to a public journal. If you want to register and post your public journal in a comment to this post, then I am going to try and find a way to gather the fun data to our blog for easy access.

http://www.fitday.com/

And you can see my profile here.

http://fitday.com/fitness/PublicJournals.html?Owner=scottgc

Good luck and may the best man thin.

[Editors note:]  Psychologically, this contest is flawed, since it promotes starving yourself for silly prizes and limited fame and glory. However, we believe this is right up our alley :)   Only partake in this contest if you are silly and want to win races.  I will try to get some cool prizes and rules together so we can determine a clear winner in 1 or 2months.

Friday night,

It is a 10km throw down:
7:00pm Rob L. vs. A-Train (Rob, Alex, try to get there is little earlier to warm up the Computrainers)
Thomas Y vs. Mike H.
Trev vs. Dennis

Someone bring good stuff to eat for after the racing!

Speed skating

Mike Godfrey and I have been getting to the Oval for the last few weeks to go speed skating. Mike's got the technique down, and glides through the gaps in the public skating crowd. I, on the other hand, aren't quite as steady on my feet and I'm concerned I'll eventually take out an errant 5 year old hockey star.

With that in mind, I joined the Calgary speed skating club on Monday. That way I'll get to skate during speed-skating-only times. I heard the club was having a mini-meet last night, so I signed up. Unfortunately, Jess wouldn't take any photos - I don't know whether that was because I came last in both my races, or because my competitors were 13-year-olds... In my defence, they were fast, especially that one girl!

Anyway, speed skating's super fun. Like cycling, a great way to do 40km/h under your own steam! Sick workout for your quads and glutes, too. If you're interested, get in touch with Mike or me and we'll go tear it up.

Lockie

Invite.

I just sent all the new members an 'invite' to post on the blog here. Please use it to post cool training stories, training rides you want company on, trash talk, etc....

Race Kit

There has been some development in terms of ordering race kit for this year. Please stay tuned as we are going to make a separate order for the club and I will need your responses soon in a timely manor. I will send out a mass email over Karelo in a few days as well as post here.

Because we are making a separate order, we have the opportunity to slightly modify the jersey to make it unique to racing members. I would only want to do something subtle though, so dudes that want to use last year's jersey still can. I am thinking of putting 'Cycling Race Team' under the Speed Theory logo. This would be cool, AND help to rid us of the stigma of being a bunch of triathletes.

Thoughts?

Friday night pain extravaganza

OK, those that are interested, leave a comment here that you can be at my place at 7pm Friday night. Bring your trainer and your bike and your Rambo tolerance for pain.

You have until Thursday night to commit. Friday morning, I will group the racers into 2 and we can go through the night smoothly and painfully.

As for workouts, I will tailor Wed. to be a little harder than normal to prep you for Friday night, then do an easy 2 X 30min (morning and night) on the rollers in the small ring on Thursday, or 1 easy 45min session. Watch Fight Club if you can.

Benchmarks and races.

I have Paul's computrainer for 1 week in my basement. So that means I have two hooked up to race head-t0-head. If any club member would like to come over either Thur/Fri evening or Sat. morning for a benchmark race. Let me know in a comment and we'll schedule it. It will be a 10km all-out TT. An immense amount of pain but worth it.

Spin starts Monday Jan 12th.

Spin starts and we start with only a small ramp to where we left off. Hold on tight.

We are going to see an increase in the number of people at the spin. Therefore: NO ONE SHOWS UP SICK! I am serious. In tight quarters the last thing I would want would be to be working out beside a sicky. We have some people, like Lisa, at our spin who's livelihood relies on consistent training. Please don't put that in jeopardy.

If you are sick, email me and I will provide you with the workout to do at home.

Should be an awesome 3 months. I am looking forward to it.

Penticton Training - another option

I will also be heading to Penticton from May 9 to 17 to do some miles on the bike. I plan on doing a couple of big rides of 200 km and the rest will likely be an average of 80 to 130 km. Anyone is welcome.

Early Season event - Big Base Miles

On February 7th I am planning to ride a 300KM Brevet hosted by the Ariziona Randonneurs. My plan is to head to Tucson for a few days around the 3rd of Febuary to get my sea legs then head up to Casa Grande (1 hour north of Tucson) late on the 6th for the 5:00am start time on the 7th. This is an excellent opportunity to get a few base miles in and up the suffering :). If your interested I can put you up in Tucson and you can bunk in the hotel room in Casa Grande. Basicly you just have to get yourself to Tucson. Let me know if your interested and I can give you more details.

Penticton Spring Training

A small group of SpeedTheory riders are going to be in Penticton from May 15 - 24 riding and running their faces off. Actually, the riding will start in Revelstoke early on the 15th with a little spin up that mountain.

These rides won't be for the weak of heart. Most days will range from 150-240k at a moderate pace. An example is day #1: the ironman bike loop including anarchist and apex. This will be roughly 240k with a ton of climbing. We aim to vary the daily routes and not duplicate very many.

So far we have myself, Tanya Salomon, Geoff Badger, Hal Kuntze, Jill Kuntze, Chris Hooper (for part at least), Kyle Marcotte is tentative, Trev is tentative.

If anyone is interested in joining us for all or part of the riding, fire up a post.

Retiring of a Hockey Legend

Hey everyone,

Recently the Vancouver Canucks retired the jersey of good ole number 16. Sent it to the rafters and honored him and what a classy individual is. I am sure it was a touching moment for some, for me I couldn't watch without covering myself in my own vomit. A stadium full of hypocrites and losers!

Sure the playoffs to the Stanley Cup are a tough battle, yahdy yahdy yahdy! Have you ever seen Bear Creek? Have you ever fallen into a sink hole of mud and bacteria so deep you almost had to get a long line from a helicopter to lift you out? Have you even stuck behind some fat german lady eating strudels and spetzels in the middle of the trail forcing you to fall off the trail and landing in a waste lumber pile at the bottom of a huge cliff and having to get you arm reattached with duct tape, fishing line and a quick chain link! (Slight exaggeration on the arm part :)

Those types of challenges bring out the worst in people and I saw it first hand from the leagues classiest player. It is those types of challenges that will bond Speed Theory together to take on all of the other teams again this year. If it's not the wheel sucking ERTC boys from Edmonton to the classless riders at Transrockies, our bonding as a team will allow us to prevail.

Sometimes I wish I was at the stadium that night so I could have had a mega phone or even the arena microphone and as he walked to ice level, I would have been screaming, "North Shore Rider Coming Through, North Shore Rider Coming Through!"

Happy New Year,

Dan

2nd Update on Spin Classes.

Due to a communication wiring crossing, it seems Thursdays aren't available at SpeedTheory. Therefore, I can't offer the Thurs. night class, unless somebody knows of a venue we could use that is close to the store ??

So, as of now, I can't provide any more options for spin classes unless someone has a great idea.

Sorry about this guys... I really like how the team is coming along and the desire to train together. I am really sad about this development. I hate capping the class.

Update on Spin Classes

First thing. I totally love how our club has embraced these spin classes and really taken advantage of the opportunity to train as a team. This is exactly what I was hoping would happen when shaping the team the last couple of years. People enjoying cycling for the lifestyle, camaraderie, and pain!

OK, further to my post below. I am going to offer a Thursday night spin starting at 7pm. This would be separate from the Mon/Wed spins in that you would have to register for these classes privately (not through the team) and they would be open to the public and the team equally. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I wouldn't be volunteering for these ones like I do for the Mon/Wed classes, these ones would be to buy Jenn something nice.

Since I would be spinning Mon/Wed and Thurs I would tailor these to fit in to that regime.

I would only do this if I got 14 people confirmed, as I would need to make it worth while to miss 2 more hours with my daughter and wife. The cost would be $110 for 11 classes. Please leave a comment below if you want to confirm.

Spin classes sold out...lets get creative.

OK, well, hopefully we are not victims of our own success. We now have the total 20 spots for the spin classes for ST members sold out. We will also have Bonnie, Tracey, Kim, Mitzie, Diana, Lisa, Lindsay there. ..plus Alex and I. So we officially have 29 spinners. Yikes.

So on Jan. 12th, for our first spin, let's try out some new methods of setting up our bikes that will not lead to people sweating on each other or staring directly into each other's eyes.

I think we can do it, but we'll have to get creative.

Spin Classes for 2009 and 2010

This year everyone will be signing up for the spin classes this way. It will alleviate the work done by the crew at SpeedTheory and should be easier.

The Mon. and Wed. night spin class

Starting at 6:30pm. This class has no ability criteria, however, it is a class designed to get you ready to race. I don't care if you are racing off the front, or racing a PB, or racing to commute faster. It is not a fitness class, and we don't make pretty sets to pass the time. We spend our precious time in the saddle getting faster on the bike and talking / getting pumped about racing. There are no egos at this class, everyone is the same speed on a trainer. If you are a triathlete, this class will likely make you faster even on the run. This year, we will include a solid stretching and core session after each spin. Learning from the last two years, I think we need to spend a few more minutes on core over the winter. This class will run from Oct. 12th to Dec. 16th. Great music, good company, and smart workouts. This class is $210 per semester and will be capped at a hard 20 spinners. It has typically sold out quickly.

I am offering an option this year to choose, 'Mon. Wed. with direction'. This is in response to the constant questions I receive pertaining to what an athlete should be doing during the other 5 days of the week to better prepare themselves for race season. With this option, I will outline and plan cycling workouts for you based on your goals (bike racing/tri/commuter Olympics) for the race season. I will endeavour to make these workouts very specific for your needs, but with this agreement, it won't be full-time personal coaching. I will limit the amount of entries for this category to ensure high quality as usual. You will receive a winter workout progression that works if you are consistent and motivated. This option will be $370 per semester.

Tues night, Sun morning class option

This will be exactly the same as the Mon/Wed option except at different times.

Tues night at 7pm, Sun morning at 9am. This class will run from Oct. 13th to Dec 20th. Remember the limit on this class will be 15 athletes. This class will be $210 per semester, or $370 if you choose the option With Direction.

---------------------------------------
This year, I am pleased to announce that we will have 2 - 4 Computrainers at my disposal to make our classes even more beneficial and make you faster. We will use them for periodic testing, racing, and having fun competitions (motivation). We will have them in Multi-Rider formation with full Coaching software, so I can analyse your data and give you suggestions.

Both spin sessions will resume with the same options on Jan 11th to March 28th 2010.

Both spin sessions start out roughly 1.5 hours in length total (bike + core) and get longer through the season. We have several bigger sessions through the season as well as a few shorter during lower weeks.

Since we can't live somewhere that hot all year, at least we can train to take advantage of the times it is! If you have any questions about the spin class or me, Trev, don't hesitate to email me at willit [at] ucalgary [dot] ca. Also, this spin class requires that you bring your bike, trainer, and mat/towel to every class. We train on what we ride!

Thank you,
Trev
