Good Luck to Lachlan tomorrow!

Lachlan takes the start line at the Redlands Classic tomorrow down in California. I will keep this post updated on his progress. This is a Pro/1 event.

Lachlan was 113th out of 205 pros. He was 4th H&R Block out of 8 on the team. Not bad !!

UPDATE ON LACHLAN.
Lachlan got a puncture when going off road avoiding a crash and had to chase the peloton after that. He Time Trialled for 90km before pulling the pin because he wasn't going to make the time cut off determined from the fast moving pack. He is unable to start tomorrow stage.

This is disappointing but a regular occurrence for professionals. It is just hard when we are focusing on our 'one guy' and it happens. We will prep for the next race and continue to build into the season.

How To Talk to Non-Cyclists

In case your friends and family display at least passing interest your cycling hobby. Here's a quick tip guide on how to speak to non-cyclists:

How to Talk to Non-Cyclists

To explain why you pay $200 to participate in a race you have very little chance in winning: "Ever play the lotto? It's like that, except much, much more so."

KEEP TABS ON THE Training Ride Forum

Now that the weather may have broken, keep tabs on the Training Ride Forum. Tom, Darcy, Michael, Dan, Thomas, and I will post bigger rides here if they are directed at the Cat4/5's and Women for learning/training purposes, but all other rides will be posted in the Training Ride Forum. I would like to see a Prairie-Roubaix pre-ride posted soon!!

NOTE: ALL club members are totally free to post rides on this forum. If you are going out for a ride and you want company... post it!! You can say 'No Drop', or 'Hard Tempo', or whatever, don't feel like if you post a ride it has to be completely inclusive. You could post your workout and say, "If you want to join me for this, come along!"....stuff like that.

April Spin Classes for Granfondo riders or Charity Ride cyclists.

Guys, I have decided to offer two spin classes directed toward people who have registered for a Granfondo or a Charity Ride. As opposed to my Race Spin Classes, which focus on race tactics, race fitness, and showing videos of awesome racing, these will focus on the fundamentals of cycling and developing fit, competent riders. We will be talking about how to safely ride in packs, nutrition during riding, and proper equipment as well. The workouts will be challenging and progressive, but not at the intensity of my race spins.

The times are Sun. and Tues. evening at 7:00pm - 8:40pm.

If you know of any friends that have decided to try out a Charity Ride or signed up for a Granfondo, please send this to this link!

Or send your friends this link directly: http://thedoctrine.ca/april-2011-spring-spin/

If these are popular, I will run these from April through June.

Thanks guys,
Trev

Pre-Roubaix Tech guide !

Guys, the Pre-Roubaix 20/40km ITT directions and race guide is up and available here.

Please support this race as it is on a great course, great Provincial ITT championship training since it is on the same course, the town is enthusiastic about cyclists, the weather is 45.6% guaranteed to be awesome.

The 'Race Eligibility' rules are the same for the Prairie-Roubaix. Basically you have to be a member of either STC or Crankys, and/or have a valid ABA race license.

This awesome race weekend is for the love of pure racing and sport, not for upgrade points. No ABA upgrade points on offer. However, the Prairie-Roubaix has awesome trophies this year made with actual gravel from the course.

The Crankmasters have joined our drive to get more women out at the races! We realize this is a small token, but we hope all our efforts add up to getting women out trying and getting addicted to racing. So women race free for the entire weekend!

Penticton Bike Camp - Make the Call and Day 3 Rides

It’s mid March and if you haven’t decided on whether or not to come to Penticton for a week of riding in May, then get on it. You can click here on the Penticton Bike Camp Overview to read some general information and help you focus a bit on getting prepared. The document summarizes what’s been posted so far about the camp and what was discussed at the meeting at Speed Theory on March 1. From here on end, the posts about the camp will be geared towards those who are actually coming. The Day 1 and Day 2 rides are posted in the previous blog post on February 25.

The rides on Day 3 are long. It’s essentially the Ironman bike course with some added hill climbs if you so desire. I removed the out-and-back because it's useless and boring. I also replaced the Yellow Lake climb with Green Mountain Road because GMR is nicer, has less traffic and the descent makes you feel like you’re flying a spaceship:

If you want roommates, let folks know you are coming to the camp in the comments section of this Blog Post. People can then see who needs a roommate and get in contact accordingly.

Live Streaming or "I love Calgary Weather"

For Milan-San Remo and the spring classics there are several websites dedicated to bringing you free live streaming so you can spin, watch the classics and warm up for the snow shovelling that will surely be needed in the coming weeks.

MSR should start streaming Saturday morning around 7:30 AM Calgary time. Here are a few options for you:

Cycling Fans

Steephill

Procycling Live

MyP2P

If you want to pay a couple of bucks:

Universal Sports

Of course we will all be out afterwards to meet at noon at the Second Cup to discuss how much snow we shovelled off our driveway and to talk about how much the weather sucks.

First positive test for HGH

I predict that today will be marked with a collective soiling of the bike shorts in the pro peloton.

Patrik Sikewitz becomes the first cyclist to fall victim to the newly approved test for human growth hormone. I would bet a lot of the dudes are panicing right about now. Retroactive testing anyone?

Reminder about the Tactics and Safe Riding Session!

Remember THIS Thursday is the session given by Tom Kenny, Dan Sigouin and me. Please attend this useful 'off-the-bike' session so we can all start on the same page when we get outside. Tom is planning on starting up the group rides and it would be great if we all had a jump on how to operate safely, predictably, and intelligently when training and racing.

Don't have time to grab dinner before the session??... NO PROBLEM... Tom will be ordering a ton of pizza and will have drinks there as well. We want you to have no excuses not to come !

UPDATE: Tom has scheduled our first group ride for this Sat. Go here and respond. Most training rides will be in the 'Training Ride Forum' from now on... so keep track of it!

See you Thurs.

Tactics Session

Where: Lakeview Community Centre 6110-34th Street S.W (behind the main building)
When: Thursday March 17th 7:15 - 9:30 (Be respectful, be
on time)
Who: YOU, yes YOU! Cat 5, 4, 3 and women

The Basics
This might be a review for some and new to others. Even if you're a seasoned rider, you'll pick up a tip or two that could put you over the finish line first!

Trev and Slayer Dan will present some of the basics that we all should know if you're racing. If time permits we'll break off into CATs to talk team strategies for the upcoming races

We'll put this stuff into practice the following Saturday if the weather permits. Practice with your fellow team mates is the key to making the team successful. We'll try and organize several team rides to hone our skills and make STC numero uno this year!

2011 Jersey-coloured helmet

Message from Speed Theory Calgary:

We have decided to make the Bell Volt helmet in the matte black and white colours available to the cycling team for 2011 at a discounted price. We figured the matte black and white colour matches perfectly with Thomas' new kit and makes this high-end, lightweight, and comfortable helmet a great choice. Regular price on this helmet is $209.99 but for a limited time we will make this helmet available to all team riders for the discounted price of $169.99. This helmet is available in sizes small, medium, and large so if you are unsure of your size stop by the shop at your nearest convenience to try it out. If you are interested in this offer please email me, Darcy, PRIOR TO MARCH 26th and we will get one on order for you.

Thanks,

Darcy

[ Editor Trev: DO NOT show up at a road event with the visor still in place!! :) ]

Penticton Camp meeting last night follow up.

Ryan hosted a very informative meeting last night to let our members know what's up with the training camp. Not too many questions after Ryan covered everything. One of the requested items was a roll call of campers that would like to share accommodations. Ryan suggested last night that the most convenient and cost effective method would be to gather into small groups and rent a townhouse for the week.

If you are coming, and would like to share accommodations, leave a comment and I will populate a little spreadsheet to get little groups together so you guys can communicate and book a place.

Thanks again to Ryan,

Trev
